Butiá Catarinensis

The Santa Catarina butiá palm, or beach butiá, is a species of the Butia genus in the palm family (Arecaceae). It is native to Brazil, especially Santa Catarina. Smaller than other butiás, it is highly resistant to wind and sandy and saline soils, making it ideal for coastal regions. It tolerates moderate cold well. Its fruits are small, yellow-orange, with sweet, slightly acidic pulp and are very aromatic. They are eaten fresh or made into jams and liqueurs. It is valued for its rustic beauty and landscape adaptability.
